Seasonal influenza (flu) is an unpredictable but recurring pressure that the NHS faces every winter. Vaccination offers the best protection. This year with the risk of flu and Covid-19 circulating it is important to vaccinate the eligible population.


Who is normally eligible for the flu vaccination?

  • Everyone aged 65 and over
  • Everyone under 65 years of age who has a chronic medical condition like those noted below:
    • lung diseases such as COPD and severe asthma, heart disease, liver or kidney disease, neurological diseases, learning disability, diabetes, weakened immune systems, morbid obesity (BMI 40 or above)
  • All pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy
  • All 2 and 3 year-old children (aged two or three years old on 31 August 2021)
  • All children in primary school (given at school)
  • All Year 7 -11 secondary school-aged children (given at school)
  • Everyone living in a residential or nursing home
  • Everyone who cares for an older or disabled person
  • All frontline health and social care workers
  • Individuals between 50 and 64 years of age maybe offered flu vaccine following prioritisation of other eligible groups and subject to vaccine supply
